Updated Restrictions To Fly With Pets On Delta Flights

With high-profile air travel-related pet deaths resulting in an outcry among pet fans, carriers such as Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines have shifted some policies for transporting creatures on board. But this also means it could now be difficult, complex, and costly to fly using a pet, be it to get a long-distance movement or get a family holiday.

Assessing the principles and limitations for flying a puppy in an airline can be complicated. As of last month, by way of instance, Delta no more carries pets as freight or checked luggage on any flights around the Boeing 767.

Delta said that it contacted clients affected by the shift to provide options. Sometimes, the airline could move the consumer to an earlier or later flight or visit its airline partners. Delta has roughly 81 Boeing 767s, one of its fleet of over 800 aircraft.

The odd 767 restriction demonstrates the way pet traveling is subject to many different factors. Delta is shifting its own global flight crew break accommodations with bunks under the passenger cabin at the 767, restricting the total amount of space available in the cargo transport. Though not all 767s fly globally, they are occasionally interchanged on flights, and Delta is currently placing the limitation set up for many 767 flights. Know everything about updated restrictions on Delta Airlines Pet Policy before booking a flight.

The 767 limitation follows other modifications Delta has set in place in recent months.

In February, Delta prohibited pets at the cottage in a global business course. With the airline installing lie-flat chairs in that area, space is restricted for pet carriers beneath chairs.

Late last year, even following a series of deaths of bulldogs and related strains, Delta prohibited snub-nosed cats and dogs as checked bags.

"Safety always has to be the top priority," said Delta spokesman Anthony Black.

Delta also will normally not take pets as checked luggage from May 15 through Sept. 15, or anytime if the exterior temperature is over 85 degrees or below ten levels at any stage, the airplane is on the floor throughout the excursion.

Over fifty percent of documented pet deaths on U.S. airlines last year were on Delta, based on national statistics. However, Delta explained the number of pets who are hurt or die on the airline is significantly less than 0.2% of pets transported.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation suggested new processes, such as: requiring reports of events involving not only pets but also dogs and cats sent commercially, like by breeders; requiring drivers to report just how many animals they transfer to compare speeds of creature incidents involving motorists; and requiring more airlines to report pet episodes. The DOT is accepting public comments on the proposal before Aug. 28.

Southwest and AirTran Airways enable crated pets in the cottage but don't let pets check baggage or freight.

People traveling with pets must consult their airline well ahead of present regulations, as stated by the American Veterinary Medical Association, including that airlines occasionally upgrade their limitations on pet travel.

"When the airlines are making these choices based on whole or in part about the health and welfare of their creature, then it is a fantastic thing," said AVMA spokesman David Kirkpatrick. Before flying pets, "owners will need to do a fantastic quantity of research."
